The Daily Grind 206

By Mike Gunderloy

After doing some Internet research, it appears that every food that I actually like triggers migraines. I can't tell whether I've stumbled into a Vast Conspiracy or a pit of unsubstantiated folklore just yet. But if I hold my head real still I can still pass on some links.

  • First, in honor of today's Office launch, the fix for one of the "features" of Office 2003 that pisses me off the most. From the Word help: "Note When you open a Microsoft Word document that you have received as an e-mail attachment, Word automatically switches to reading layout view. If you don't want to use reading layout view for e-mail attachments, clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box on the General tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu)." Also I note that the old Outlook bug that shows the new mail icon on the toolbar even if every new mail message was deleted by a rule is still present in Outlook 2003. It's the little things that make me crabbiest.
  • And just in case you need another dose of Office hype: Office launch press release, Exchange launch press release. I think the hype-machine needs some tuning, though; they've managed to mostly drown out the Office hype with Longhorn hype even before the official Office launch.
  • "How Offshore Outsourcing Failed Us" - In-the-trenches tale of an outsourcing project gone sour.Encouraging reading for those worried about all the local programming jobs moving overseas.
  • Microsoft Visual Studio Industry Partners - Good list of tools that integrate with Visual Studio .NET, though the navigation is pretty annoying.
  • Microsoft Office Developer Center - Newly-overhauled for Office 2003, of course.
  • TestRunner - NUnit integration for Visual Studio .NET.
