Wednesday, February 12, 2003I ran across a free (and short) e-book online from Robert L. Read, who actually seems to have a few things to say. Titled How to be a Programmer: A Short, Comprehansive, and Personal Summary, it's full of advice on the softer side of development. Rather than concentrate on algorithms and data structures, Read works on things like how to tell when it's time to go home, how to break bad news to people, and how to estimate. There are some bits of wry humor here, such as
You should take a break or go home if you think homicidal thoughts for more than a few seconds.
Depending on your skills and background, you might or might not learn things here. If you've never had a job with a good boss sharing wisdom, this one is worth at least a quick skim. Even if you have had such a job, you might find a few things worth pondering.
